Description

Our store is designed to please the casual gourmet who is dedicated to eating well, but with no time or inclination to stand at the stove or linger in line at the grocery. We modeled Gourmet on 5th after the epicurian “Traiteur” shoppes of Europe which offer deliciously sophisticated, fresh prepared foods “to go.” All of our dishes are made by us from scratch in our store, or in the larger kitchens of our sister restaurants: Hexagone on Laurel or French Market Grille in Rancho Berrnado.

Our menu offers classic haute-to-go meals such as Coq-au-Vin and Bouillabaisse, along with crepes, artisan salads, pissadelieres, signature sandwiches (including vegetarian) on freshly baked breads, luxurious pastries, espresso drinks, exotic teas, and hand selected table wines. In addition, many of the flourishes for cooking your own instant gourmet meal at home will be stocked on our shelves. Selections are packaged to take with you, for a quick bite in the store, or delivery to our neighbors’ doors.

Our service begins at breakfast and ends mid-evening after the dinner hour. We will send you home with Sunday brunch, an intimate four course dinner for two. Or with a little notice, a picnic for 50 for your family reunion. Our blackboard menu changes seasonally, so there is always a reason to stop by and taste what’s cooking.

Post museum time in Balboa Park, I could not wait to get out to a more quiet place and have a coffee and croissant (some sort of late breakfast) last Saturday. I thought that Gourmet on 5th was mostly about food and they would not have good quality coffee and pastries, but I was wrong!

The pastries are fresh from the day (coming from a bakery in Hillcrest) and my capuccino was excellently prepared. I was also happily surprised to see one of my favorite waiters from Cardamom Cafe working now here, he was super friendly and remembered me (I guess must be my accent or the fact that I ask too many questions!).

The soundtrack of my pleasant quiet time was a collection of nouveau French chanson. I loved it, very mellow, for some moments thought I was in some real French bistro (posters on the wall also helped). I need to come more often to try the food, but I enjoyed the simplicity of my warm croissant and coffee observing people passing by a sunny 5th Ave.
